Get Your Garden Ready For Winter

Although people tend to speak about spring cleaning, autumn is the perfect time to get outside, enjoy some great
outdoor time and get your garden ready for winter. At Lothian Building Supplies we like to make sure that we
help our customers keep their gardens looking great throughout the year, and autumn is no exception.
So, what should you be doing right now to get your garden ready for winter? Here are some of the key things
we’ll be focusing on in our own gardens and we’d encourage you to do the same:
House Painting or Touchup
Before we get started on your garden, it’s worth pointing out that now is the ideal time to make sure your house is
in great shape externally ahead of the winter. Autumn is the perfect time to either tackle a full house
re-paint or to tidy up any areas that are looking tired or weary. Doing this job when it’s not too hot and not too
cold makes it a whole lot easier and more pleasurable. If your house or maisonry needs a bit of TLC, check
this out.
Fence Staining
Now is the perfect time to make sure your fencing is in tip top condition and ready for what the winter months are
likely to throw at it. We have a range of paint and
accessories as well as timber
treatments in stock that
will help you get your fencing (and masonry) ready for the winter weather. Preserving wood is the best way to
lengthen its lifespan and keep it looking great for longer. And, with our 10% online ordering discount, there
has never been a better time to make sure you buy while stocks last.
The Last Cut
During peak summer, when you seem to be spending every weekend cutting grass, you could probably happily see your
lawn far enough. But there’s something quite emotional about ‘the last cut’. When you cut your grass for
the last time this year will depend on where you live and what the weather is doing. But as a rule of thumb,
your last cut is likely to be coming up very soon.
And of course, if you really could see your lawn far enough, artificial turf is a great option which has come on
leaps and bounds in terms of its authenticity in recent years – so maybe give that some thought.
Trim Hedges/Trees
Hedges and trees need your attention at this time of year to get them ready to look great next year. Trimming
your hedges and trees in the autumn will give the plant time to harden off before the risk of frost. Autumn is
also a good time to get rid of any dead or diseased wood to leave space for the healthy parts of your hedge/tree to
blossom later.
Wash or Replace Paving Slabs
Dirty paving can get slippery in the winter months, so now is the time to get your paving slabs clean and
safe. A thorough sweep and a good pressure wash are usually enough to restore your paving to its former glory,
but if you need to replace grout or prime your paving, now’s the time to do it.
And of course, if you need to re-do your paving or replace broken slabs, we’re here to help. Check out the
paving section of our website for inspiration and don’t forget that we are currently offering a 10% discount for
online orders with fast delivery and the option for Click and Collect if you want to pick up.
Think Ahead for our Feathered Friends
Winter can be a tough time for birds and wildlife, so finally, consider adding a bird feeder to your garden.
Even if you’re not much of a twitcher, you’ll be surprised at the hours of entertainment you get watching the birds
from the cosiness of your home (just make sure you place bird feeders well out of the reach of cats).
